
ACI Boland proudly collaborates annually with the University of Kansas School of Architecture, engaging a talented intern from their Health and Wellness program. This partnership provides a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on, real-world experience within our Heal Studio. Working alongside seasoned professionals on active projects, these interns acquire invaluable skills and practical knowledge, enriching their final year of academic study.
Mallory McGraw, this year’s intern and our newest fulltime employee in May, shared her experiences in the interview below.
WHERE DO YOU GO TO SCHOOL AND WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR?
Mallory McGraw: I go to the University of Kansas and my major is Architecture. I am in the 5-year Master of Architecture program, and am currently in the graduate-year Health and Wellness program.
WHAT MADE YOU INTERESTED IN ARCHITECTURE?
Mallory McGraw: I originally chose to study architecture because of the blend of creativity and logic. I further found myself interested in the impact architecture can on both humanity and the environment. This realization shifted my perspective to perceive the world through a lens that acknowledged design’s potential to address societal challenges directly and help people.
WHAT ARE YOUR DAY TO DAY TASKS AT ACI BOLAND?
Mallory McGraw: I have been involved in a range of projects at ACI Boland. As an intern, I am integrated into a project team for a hospital remodel and addition project, as well as assisting with smaller-scale remodels where needed. My day-to-day tasks include collaborating with project designers and participating in client meetings. I contribute by updating projects based on client feedback and assisting with design decisions throughout various phases of the design process.

WHAT NEW SKILLS, TECHNIQUES, OR KNOWLEDGE HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM INTERNING AT ACI BOLAND?
Mallory McGraw: I have gained a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience from interning at ACI Boland. Professionally, I have had the opportunity to observe how strong client and consultant relationships are built and maintained, learning how to foster these relationships in various settings, whether in collaborative meetings or during presentations led by ACI Boland. Additionally, I have learned how to effectively collaborate with a project team throughout all phases of design. I have also gained insight into the time management aspects of a project, from preparing weekly presentations to meeting deadlines for design submittals. On a technical level, I have further developed my skills in programs like Revit and Bluebeam.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT INTERNING AT ACI BOLAND?
Mallory McGraw: I enjoy the opportunity to work with such a talented and supportive team. Everyone at ACI Boland is willing to share their expertise to help me learn and grow. This positive and approachable atmosphere fosters a great learning environment and makes me feel valued as a part of the team.

HAS THERE BEEN A SPECIAL PROJECT DURING YOUR INTERNSHIP THAT YOU LIKED WORKING ON? IF SO, CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT IT?
Mallory McGraw: During my internship, the primary project I have worked on is the addition and remodel of Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center, Iowa. I have been an integrated member of the project team from schematic design through to the construction drawings phase and will assist with construction administration in the future. This project has provided me with invaluable insights into the design of critical access hospitals and the unique needs of rural communities, making it an incredibly rewarding and educational experience. I look forward to continuing my involvement in this project and further contributing to its successful completion.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE BEING AN INTERN AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?
Mallory McGraw: The biggest challenge I have faced as an intern at ACI Boland has been adjusting to the fast-paced nature of the projects and managing multiple tasks simultaneously. At first, it was a bit overwhelming to keep track of a project timeline. However, I have overcome this challenge by learning how to prioritize tasks effectively. By seeking guidance from experienced professionals around me, I have become more confident in managing these responsibilities.
HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING AND COLLABORATING WITH THE REST OF THE ACI BOLAND STAFF?
Mallory McGraw: My experience collaborating with the rest of ACI Boland staff has been amazing. Everyone on the team is incredibly welcoming and supportive, creating a very positive atmosphere. I truly feel like a valued member of the ACI Boland family.
HOW HAS YOUR INTERNSHIP HELPED FURTHER YOUR CAREER AND HELPED YOU UNDERSTAND THE ARCHITECTURE PROFESSION?
Mallory McGraw: Being an intern has provided me with the invaluable opportunity to immerse myself into the professional field, gaining hands-on experience while still pursuing my studies. This experience has allowed me to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application, giving me a deeper understanding of the architectural profession. It has also helped me begin my journey as an emerging professional, allowing me to develop practical skills and insights that will serve me well as I move forward in my career.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANY FUTURE INTERNS?
Mallory McGraw: My advice to future interns is to be a “sponge”, eagerly absorbing as much knowledge and insight as possible. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn, ask questions, and seek feedback. Always remain open to new experiences, as you never know where you may discover a passion.
