Throughout the design and construction of Rhein Benninghoven Elementary, three key elements were carefully considered: sustainability, research and design, and connectivity. Materials, natural light, flexible learning environments, team teaching, and project-based learning were also important to the design.
The central building core promotes student collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. By creating diverse and inclusive spaces, children can learn “in the between spaces.”
Reclaimed ash wood was used throughout the building to meet the District’s sustainability goals. The wood was harvested and milled from ash trees affected by the Emerald Ash Borer infestation.
By combining the goals of the District with the notion of timeless design, we created an overall environment that brings students together in what will be the community learning center for generations of students to come.
