Employee Spotlight: Richard Ouk

Richard Ouk
Education: Master of Architecture, Kansas State University

What is your favorite thing about your job?
”I like getting to take the client’s aspirations and vision for their building or space and helping them realize it into a tangible form.”

How did you choose your profession?
”I chose it after a family trip to Chicago when I was 10. Living predominantly in the Midwest, I hadn’t experienced architecture on that scale. I realized people get to create and design these buildings, forms, and experiences and really started to explore the idea through the rest of my education.”

Who inspires you?
”Norman Foster. Just check out his Instagram. I’ve always been inspired by his work. You can tell he has personality and is very active all while maintaining such a successful practice. Hope to be half as active as he is at his age and hopefully as well traveled.”

What are your hobbies outside of work?
I try to travel when I can and explore the city. My friends and I love to try new food places too. Like to play around with photography although it’s mostly through my phone right now.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
”Treat finding a good firm to work for like dating. It should be mutually beneficial and work with your personality and goals. Not every firm is the same and you should find the best fit for you!“

If ACI Boland was to open a new office anywhere in the world, where would you want to relocate?
”Copenhagen. It’s where I studied abroad and would love to be immersed in the design there again.”
