Merriam, Kan. – Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has begun the first phase of a renovation project that will transform the first floor of the original hospital tower on its campus. This construction project is one of many for Shawnee Mission Health (SMH), following the addition of a critical care tower in 2009 and the Shawnee Mission Birth Center in 2011.
“We’re committed to bringing our patients person-centered care in an aesthetically pleasing and modern environment,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Karsten Randolph. “Our recent growth and the current renovations demonstrate our investment in the future. We look forward to continuing to satisfy the needs of our patients and their families beyond their expectations.”
The first-floor transformation includes additional offices, an updated administrative suite, a physician lounge, state-of-the-art conference rooms and brand-new serving and dining areas. The renovations feature technology updates such as new audio/visual systems in the conference rooms as well as charging stations and a cyber café in the dining areas.
“The technology updates will allow our patients and their families to stay connected, even during a hospital stay,” said Director of Facilities, Design & Construction Jason Piper. “The entire scheme of the dining areas will reflect what today’s customers expect – a variety of options and quick service in a café-like atmosphere.”
Construction will occur in phases and is expected to be completed by fall 2016. The entire renovation project is part one of a three-phase Master Plan to modernize the campus in order to better serve patients and associates. The project is estimated to cost $25 million.
SMH is working with a local team of construction and design partners including ACI Boland Architects; mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers Henderson Engineers, Inc.; civil engineers Bob D. Campbell & Co., Inc.; general contractor JE Dunn Construction and interior designer Meghan Dudek with Benson Wedd.
